New Legislation Requires Regulatory Information On Business Websites

01 December 2006

Any UK company will be required to include certain regulatory information on its website before January 1st 2007 in order to comply with the updated Companies Act legislation.

Every limited company should list on its website its company registration number, place of registration and registered office address.  This information does not need to appear on every page of the site, but it should be presented in legible characters and easily accessible.

This information is necessary on all websites, irrespective of whether products are directly available for purchase from the site, although eCommerce websites are also subject to other legal requirements.

According to the UK’s Ecommerce Regulations at OUT-LAW, a company should include a minimum of the following on its website:

  • The business name, postal address and email address. The business name should be that with which the customer is contracting, which may differ from the trading name.  In this instance, any difference should be made clear.

  • For registered companies, the company’s registration number and place of registation.

  • For VAT-registered businesses, the company’s VAT number.

  • Also, if the business belongs to any professional or trade associations, details of its membership should be provided.
